E. Wilfer (BASTOCK171) #13, 4/4 Gamba, Möhrendorf Germany
Even among Wilfer basses, this is something special. The maple of the back and sides is mildly, but very evenly flamed. The spruce of the top is very tightly and evenly grained. The large Gamba-shaped body is comfortable to play, and the string length is kept to a playable mensure, less than 42". The real beauty of this bass, however, is in the sound. When musicians come into our shop in search....

Gill Master Double Bass (BASTOCK091) Panormo Model
This bass was recently built in Germany by Heinrich Gil. It is modeled after the 7/8 instruments Vincenzo Panormo made while in London. The wintergrain of the top has been etched out to create a ribbed effect. The upper shoulders are full, but sweep into a rather tall neck joint with a pronounced overstand, keeping the string length quite short for a 7/8 instrument, and allowing easy access to the....

Thomas Martin 3/4 Bass
Sold! No longer available.
This bass was built in 2002 by Thomas Martin. The neck is perched high upon the shoulders with a generous overstand. Combined with the short string length it is very easy to get into and out of the upper register. The top and back have very elegant purfling and beading on their edges. Also note the Sloane tuning machines and their 50:1 tuning ratio.
These instruments are usually much more expensive when purchased new, directly from Martin. Here’s your chance to get one that’s been played in for significantly less than the same instrument new.

Early 20th Century 7/8 Bass (BASTOCK136)
Sold! No longer available.
Visualize yourself playing this unusual and powerful-sounding bass. See yourself playing jazz trio gigs without an amp. Hear sustaining, melodic music emanating from your bass while you easily reach for notes anywhere on the fingerboard. Own this unconventional bass.
This early 20th century, 7/8 bass has some very unusual features. The original flat back was replaced with an unpurfled, book-matched mahogany back. The bottom ribs are actually one long rib, extending from the one lower corner block, around the bottom, and to the other lower corner block. The neck joint is set high upon very sloping shoulders, allowing easy access to upper registers despite the 42 ½ inch string length. This bass is currently set up for jazz and has great growl and sustain.

1964 German Roth 3/4 Bass
Sold! No longer available.
Basses bearing the Roth name are often a cut above. This instrument has a slightly reduced upper half, and slightly enlarged lower allow access to the upper register and sufficient air volume for full fundamentals in the lower registers. The fingerboard was recently replaced so that the thickness is full. At about the same time, a complete setup and adjustment was done to get the most from the instrument, especially a strong fundamental on the lower notes. A great all around bass.
Specifications:
- Upper bout width: 19 1/2"
- Middle bout width: 14 1/2"
- Lower bout width: 25 7/8"
- Rib depth (inc. top & back): 8 1/2"

Johann Georg Thir, Vienna, 1745 (BASTOCK160)
Sold! No longer available.
Johann Georg Thir was widely considered the best violin maker in Vienna from 1738-1781. He also made Violones and five-string Viennese basses, many of which have been modernized as this bass has. The bass offered here is not entirely original. The top and upper ribs are original, but the back, lower ribs, and scroll were replaced at various points in its long history. This diminishes the collectors’ value of the instrument. Conversely, it presents the opportunity for a budget-minded player to acquire a mature-sounding instrument worthy of the orchestra audition circuit.
Specifications:
- Upper bout width: 20"
- Middle bout width: 13 1/4"
- Lower bout width: 25 1/4"
- Rib depth (inc. top & back): 9"
- Playing string length: 42 1/4"

Late 1800's 3/4 Gamba Bass (Bohemian)
Sold! No longer available.
This instrument's golden varnish accentuates the figure in the maple of the back, sides and neck, and also underscores the character that comes with a well-used, one-hundred-year-old instrument. The heel, neck joint, and shoulders are very well proportioned, creating a very comfortable "D neck" despite the surprisingly long string length. This bass', warm sound, long sustain, and current set up favor Jazz playing, but it can be easily tweaked for other styles.
Specifications:
- Upper bout width: 20 1/8"
- Middle bout width: 15"
- Lower bout width: 25 1/4"
- Rib depth (inc. top & back): 8 1/4"

Italian 3/4 Gamba Bass, Late 1800's (BASTOCK148)
Sold! No longer available.
This gamba-shaped bass has a broad flat-back. It has cracks that were repaired some time ago and have since been stable. The back is kerfed and bent inward, sloping the back in towards the heel of the neck. At some point a new neck of plain maple, matching the sides and back, was grafted. The scroll is original. It has wide purfling and a small elongated bead around the top, typical of a late 19th century Italian instrument.
The instrument’s documents state “used in Turkish Philharmonic…by two principal players…brought to US by retired soloist/principal, former student of Koussevitzky.”

Unlabeled Italian, circa 1790
Sold! No longer available.
This little Italian flat back has no label, but was probably built between 1780 and 1800. In the mid 1900's it was played in the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington D.C., and in the mid to late 1800's it was played in an opera house in Naples, Italy.
In addition to the obvious unusual features of this instrument, it has a removable neck. The maker dovetailed the neck into a maple neck block and secured it with a screw. It is pictured in the Raymond Elgar book Looking At the Double Bass, on pages 58-60.
This truly unique instrument was here for too short a time. It has already found a new home.

Mid 1800’s 3/4 Gamba
Sold! No longer available.
Made by Carl Grimm or his son-in-law Carl Hellmig, this bass was produced in the middle 1800’s. The only label is a small stamp bearing the name “Grimm” below the button on the back. The work in Grimm’s shop is noted for fine tone and flawless varnish. The upper bouts are slightly larger and the varnish glows with a dark chestnut color. Considering its age, the condition of this bass is outstanding. One lovely detail is the original hand-forged tuning keys with a thin layer of brass on the outside. This beauty won’t last long.

1970 Hofner Laminated Bass
Sold! No longer available.
Seldom have we seen a laminated bass with such sophistication. The top veneers have been very carefully chosen to have fine, even flame all over the back and sides. Made in 1970, this bass is in excellent condition and possesses a balance of tone uncharacteristic of a laminated instrument. Complimenting good fundamentals are a midrange and brightness of tone that are far more sophisticated than one would expect at this price. Beauty and tone at a price you can afford.

Kay Bass Serial #6604 - 1940
Sold! No longer available.
Made in 1940 (SN 6604), this is the best Kay bass we’ve ever seen. It was originally made as a Chubby Jackson 5 string, but was converted to four in recent years. While all the 5 string hardware remains, the fingerboard was reduced to a normal 4 string width.
So check out these details: inlaid purfling (even around the “F” holes), original finish, original tuning machines (which have been spray-painted silver), and the best flame grain ever on the back. The scroll even has a fully carved volute which remains in tact. Also, upgrades and repairs have been carefully and professionally done over the years. These include a new German end pin, wood pins to reinforce the neck heel joint, and a wedge under the fingerboard to increase the height of the bridge. The wedge also increases the power of the sound.
The bass is in very healthy condition, has an authoritative sound and a smooth, well-worn feel on the neck. Don’t miss it!

- Upper bout width: 20"
- Lower bout width: 25 1/2"
- Rib depth (inc. top & back): 7 3/4"

1836 Elite Italian or French Bass
Sold! No longer available.
Is it Italian? Or is it French? Labeled "Joseph Antonio Rocca, fecit Taurini, anno Domini 1836", this fine old bass will find a home among North America's discerning professional elite. The instrument is in wonderful condition, showing signs of use, but not abuse. All wood appears to be original except the fingerboard and a wedge fitted between the upper block and the heel of the neck in order to increase the height of the bridge. Extremely responsive to the bow and nicely adjusted for ease of play, the sound is loud, rich, tonally balanced, and even. Please note that there are six photos in this article which include special details such as picture of the label.
The fact that we were unable to validate the authenticity of the label has drastically affected our price. Well qualified luthiers on two continents could only agree that there are both Italian and French elements in this bass. As a result, the intended asking price has been cut in half.

- Lower bout width: 26 7/16"

Hornsteiner Early 1900’s 7/8 Bass
Sold! No longer available.
Lemur was lucky enough to obtain this bass from the widow of a professional bassist in San Diego. After replacing the fingerboard and fitting a new bridge and sound post, it became the most powerful jazz bass in the shop. I say “jazz bass” for two reasons: one is that the instrument is strung with Spirocore which shows off the incredible midrange color and swelling sustain; and the second is that there are several jazz teachers and players in this area who gain their livelihood with basses very much like this one. After reading up on Hornsteiner, this bass seems to be typical of the family’s work – the woods are not spectacular, but the sound is. This is a big bass, so you need to be prepared for the physical challenge. But the rewards in terms of sound - in every register - will pay off.

George Bryant Small 3/4 Bass
Lowell Massachusetts, 1885
Sold! No longer available.
This is a very special bass looking for a professional home. The maker, George Bryant, lived in Lowell Massachusetts where this bass was made in 1885. The materials are unusual and very specially selected. For example, all the maple has a quilted appearance rather than the normal flame grain pattern, and the top grain is exceptionally even. Workmanship is excellent including the letter "B" carved into the button at the end of the neck heel.
Though this bass is not large, in the range of a small 3/4 size, the sound is very loud, full and projecting. A professional arco player will appreciate this bass as a solo instrument, or perhaps a person of smaller stature will use this bass as a primary instrument in conservatory or professionally.

Hungarian Flatback Bass
Sold! No longer available.
This Hungarian bass has no label so it is impossible to know many details about its pedigree. However, the bass is carefully antiqued and looks older than it really is. Most likely a 20th century instrument with wonderfully playable dimensions and a very strong sound. Having been owned by a student completing his masters degree in bass performance, this instrument is now on the market because the owner has decided to switch to period music and play the viol da gamba. We're confident that if you like paprika, you'll agree that this bass is better than goulash.

Wenzel B. Wilfer
7/8 Bass, 1965
Sold! No longer available.
This is a very loud bass.
Wenzel Wilfer made basses of exceptional quality near Nurenburg until his death in the 1970's. The body has a distinctive aspect, being comparatively wide and flat. This, coupled with a very playable string length, makes a bass that's easy to play and projects a very strong sound to the audience.
Strong and even throughout, this bass has enough midrange strength and definition to be a jazz professional's primary instrument, and enough fundamental power to be worthy of almost any symphony. Versatile and strong.
Specifications:
- Upper bout width: 21 1/2"
- Lower bout width: 27 5/8"
- Rib depth (inc. top & back): 7 5/8"

Jusek 3/4 Gamba Bass
ca. 1960
Sold! No longer available.
Made in about 1960, this Jusek bass is a jazz machine. The fingerboard has been detailed to avoid any buzz, even with absurdly low action, and the tone has matured into a responsive voice that sings clearly in all registers. Low-end growl, singing sustain in the midrange, and clear articulation in the upper positions. The Barbera pickup shown in the picture has been removed to keep the price down; I suggest outfitting this bass with a B-Band pickup system for ultimate sound and flexibility.
Specifications:
- Upper bout width: 19 1/4"
- Lower bout width: 25 5/8"
- Rib depth (inc. top & back): 8 5/16"

E.M. Pöllmann (BASTOCK170) "Student Model," Mittenwald

You will appreciate the loving craftsmanship and a warm, strong sound in this dark colored bass. The woods were chosen for sound, not fancy flames. But the hand-rubbed varnish and careful antiquing create inviting beauty without it.
This instrument was the primary instrument for a jazz musician in the San Diego area for the last 7 years. It has been played out several times a week and records excellently.
